Abstract

The development of sanitation infrastructure is an important aspect in improving the quality of public health and environmental sustainability. Tanjungbalai City, as one of the coastal cities in North Sumatra, still faces various challenges in providing proper sanitation facilities, especially toilets and septic tanks. This research aims to analyze the current sanitation conditions, obstacles faced, and sustainable development strategies in Tanjungbalai. Based on literature studies and field data, it was found that the main obstacles include budget limitations, low public awareness, and weak regulatory and supervisory systems. The suggested strategies include a participatory approach, the provision of technical and financial support, and institutional strengthening. The active role of the government and the community is the key to success in building a decent, safe, and environmentally friendly sanitation system in the future.
